About the Hong Kong Laureate Forum

Welcome to the June 2026 issue of the Hong Kong Laureate Forum newsletter!

A Ground of Inspirations

As we reach the midway point of the year, let us take a moment to reflect on the remarkable ways in which scientific discovery continues to benefit humanity, and to explore the latest updates on our ongoing journey of inspiring the thinkers of tomorrow.

Welcoming the 2026 Shaw Laureates

The Shaw Prize 2026 was officially announced on 27 May. As one of the world’s most prestigious recognitions, it honours breakthrough research that stands at the forefront of science. We extend our warmest congratulations to the 2026 Shaw Laureates for their distinguished contributions:

Astronomy: Prof Ken’ichi Nomoto and Prof Stanford Woosley
Life Science and Medicine: Prof Anne Dejean, Prof Hugues de Thé and Prof Zhu Chen
Mathematical Sciences: Prof Emmanuel Candès and Prof Camillo De Lellis

The Hong Kong Laureate Forum is privileged to have The Shaw Prize Foundation as our Major Partner, and we are proud to celebrate the achievements of the Laureates. We look forward to providing vibrant platforms where these brilliant minds can share their life-changing discoveries and invaluable insights with emerging scientists worldwide in the near future.

Sparking Scientific Inspiration Beyond Classrooms

Earlier this year, we successfully launched our hallmark initiative, “Exploring New Horizons 2026”, with over 450 secondary school students and teachers to have visited leading local laboratories and research facilities, gaining direct exposure to real-world scientific environments.

The true essence of this initiative goes beyond the lab visits – it lies in sparking curiosity and nurturing a lifelong passion for science. We once again extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participating laboratories and partners, whose invaluable contributions and support made this impactful journey possible. This impact is best captured through the voices of the participants:

“This eye-opening visit introduced a new option to consider for my future development.” – Student participant

“I highly recommend the programme as it provides a unique experiential learning opportunity to students.” – Teacher participant

To showcase these transformative experiences, we have produced three highlight videos featuring participants’ reflections, the passion of local researchers, and the spirit of discovery. Visit the playlist to relive these inspiring moments.

Coming Soon: Science Seminar this September – A Prelude to the Hong Kong Laureate Forum 2027

Building on our mission to stimulate cross-disciplinary dialogue, preparations are well underway for our upcoming Science Seminar – one of the key preludes leading to Hong Kong Laureate Forum 2027.

We are honoured to present this seminar, which will be held at The Chinese University of Hong Kong from 9 to 10 September 2026. Centred on the pioneering theme Science in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, this 1.5-day seminar will serve as a focused hub for dynamic scientific exchange, with an engaging programme designed to bring cutting-edge concepts closer to both early-career researchers and the scientifically curious.

Alongside presentations and panel discussions led by renowned scientists and industry experts, the Science Seminar features dedicated platforms to foster cross-generational scientific exchange and build robust professional networks. Passionate young researchers will have the opportunity to showcase their latest research ideas, projects, or breakthroughs through Poster and/or Flash Presentations.

About the Hong Kong Laureate Forum

Welcome to the March 2026 issue of the newsletter of the Hong Kong Laureate Forum!

A Ground of Inspirations

Embarking on the fifth edition of Exploring New Horizons, one of our key initiatives targeting secondary students, took place from January to March 2026. This year’s programme has arranged 16 enriching visits, hosting close to 450 students and teachers from 18 secondary schools. Participants explored laboratories at local universities, research facilities, and science-related enterprises in Hong Kong. Guided by passionate representatives from these institutions and partners, students delved into diverse fields – from observing the Sun through telescope to examining cells under the microscope, from exploring innovative medical robotic arms to sustainable garment production.

This year, we are delighted that Exploring New Horizons forged a new partnership with FutureGen Girls Foundation, an esteemed organisation dedicated to empowering teen girls through STEM. Over 70 talented young female students participated in two engaging sessions, gained firsthand exposure to authentic laboratory environments, and engaged in meaningful dialogues with scientists and researchers. Through these experiences, students deepened their understanding of scientific work, strengthened their interest in science, and were inspired to pursue future research and discovery.

The Council of the Hong Kong Laureate Forum expresses its sincerest gratitude to the following partners and organisations (in alphabetical order) for their remarkable support for Exploring New Horizons 2026, and kudos to those who have been with us for consecutive years!

Celebrating Scientific Excellence

In January, The Shaw Prize Foundation announced its first major expansion in over two decades – the establishment of The Shaw Prize in Computer Science. Since the start of the century, technological progress has transformed nearly every aspect of human life. At the heart of these advancements lies Computer Science, a discipline that poses fundamental questions and pushes human thinking to new limits. The addition of this new category is a natural extension of The Shaw Prize’s vision – to honour groundbreaking ideas and discoveries that benefit humankind. The inaugural laureate(s) will be announced in 2027, alongside the existing categories of Astronomy, Life Science and Medicine, and Mathematical Sciences.

The HKLF is thrilled to celebrate this significant milestone together with the scientific community. The Shaw Prize and the HKLF shared a common commitment – to recognise remarkable achievements and to ignite the passion of the next generation of scientific talent. Building on the success of the first two editions, preparations are underway for the third Hong Kong Laureate Forum, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027. The Forum will present a series of dedicated programmes that bring together established and young scientists, as well as the general public, and foster cross-generational, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary interactions to inspire further innovation and exploration.

Leading up to the Forum, the HKLF is honoured to host two sessions of science seminars targeting emerging researchers from the local universities and students. These sessions aim to inspire and equip participants with a deeper understanding of scientific principles, expose them to cutting-edge research frontiers, and cultivate interdisciplinary dialogues. Stay tuned for more information on these stimulating seminars!
